How's everyone doing?
Today is day 6 of 30. Things are going well. Jay is staying strong. He has found solace in corn chips, which contain neither flour nor sugar. He's not eating them by the bagful or anything, but it is a little bright spot in his otherwise snack-free life.
My scripture study with Jay is moving along smoothly. We haven't missed a day yet! (Although admittedly we're falling shy of 5 pages a day.) Studying the scriptures this past week really prepared me for church today. I felt more in tune with the Spirit and was better able to understand what was being taught in class, etc. I am definitely motivated to continue with our studying. I am hoping that one of the benefits I receive from this is an increased measure of patience. Hasn't happened yet, but I'm hopeful...
How is everyone else doing on their 30 day goals? I hope that everyone is staying strong! Feel free to write us (or post a comment) to let us know how you're doing! We want to hear from you!

Man this is hard!
It is day 3 of my 30 days of no sugar no flour. This is a lot more difficult than I thought it would be. You never realize how much stuff we eat that has flour or sugar. You know things like Snickers, Reese's, M&M's, Bagels, Sourdough bread, English muffins, Cake, and Peanut Butter Capt'n Crunch, Etc...... All the good stuff.....so it would seem.
I am also having "mood" cravings. IE the girls are fighting or whining and I immediately want to turn to something sweet, and sugar free sour mints don't quite do the trick like a bag of Reese's peanut butter cups would.
I am proud of myself though. I have had many opportunities to eat junk. On Day one I had to go back to work at Domino's.(I deliver pizzas a few nights a week for extra cash) That was not fun. When I got to work my boss offered me some Cinnastixs that he had recently made. Oh man they smelled good. Later that night he asked me if I was going to make a pizza. I had to say no but man it sounded good. The smell of all of it was tempting but I stayed the course.
On day 2 the girls were restless and wanted to get out. Bea had done the deuce on the potty so we had to get her a reward. So we combined the two and went out for ice cream and crepes at a place nearby. The girls just got Ice cream, Amy got a strawberry crepe, and I got a diet 7up. I again stayed the course. It was hard but it is worth it.
I also was suffering from a bad headache on day 2. I remember a similar feeling when I stopped drinking caffeine in high school. Nothing a few Aleve couldn't take care of.
I have enjoyed the food I can eat. I have had home made tacos(corn tortillas only), brown rice pasta and sauce, tuna salad on sprouted wheat bread(in every other state this is called coardboard but thanks to Hippies in California we now can consume it) I also eat eggs and lots of fruit.
I'm feeling a lot better today. To quote Sheridan Whiteside "My headache is gone with the wind" Things don't seem to be as tempting as they were two days ago. I hope that will be the case the rest of the way.

Day 1 & 2 (Amy's Thoughts)
Amy's thoughts (Day 1)
Jay has done well with eating no sugar and no flour. I haven't noticed much difference in his temper as he comes off the sugar, but we'll see what happens over the next few days. *wink* I know working tonight (he delivers pizzas part-time) will be a challenge, but I'm certain he can overcome it.
We also started studying the scriptures as a couple today. We decided to read the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke & John in the New Testament). We use the LDS (Latter-Day Saint) King James version of the Bible. We read 5 pages today. One of the benefits of being on maternity leave is that we were able to read during the day, which eliminates the "falling asleep" factor that tends to happen to me when I read my scriptures at night. Don't get me wrong, it's not the content that puts me to sleep... I fall asleep reading anything at night.
Amy's thoughts (Day 2)
Today we continued studying the scriptures together but we read late at night, after we had put Dexter to sleep. I almost forgot about our goal, but I'm glad I didn't! We started where we had left off and read the Sermon on the Mount as recorded in Matthew. We read 2 chapters, and they are two of my favorite chapters in all of the New Testament. I was struck when I read "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." (Matt 6:33) Am I doing that? Am I putting the Lord first in my life? It has definitely given me something to think about...
As far as Jay is doing, I think he is doing well. When he has time to post I'm sure he'll have more insight, but he has stuck to his "no sugar or flour" goal for two days, even while the girls and I had dessert at Banana Crepe in Japantown. (Going there was his suggestion by the way... I wouldn't be that cruel to tempt him like that! He wanted to reward Bea for continuing to um... go #2 on the potty.) Anyway, on Day 2 Jay was a little grumpier and had a sugar-withdrawal headache, but I'm sure his body will adjust soon. He definitely has more will power than I have.

30 days to change
Hello Friends & Family,
As you all should know by now, about two weeks ago Amy and I received a wonderful gift from the Lord. His name is Dexter and so far hasn't given us much trouble. During one of my turns getting up with Dex I got to thinking about how I could change my life for the better. I was inspired by Morgan Spurlock's TV show 30 days,(that we got with our Netflix 2 week trial) where he tries something for 30 days to see if he can, or if it will change his life for better or worse. He tried living on minimum wage, living as a Muslim, and taking anti-aging meds to name a few. None of which I could afford to do, but I got to thinking of simple things that I could do that might have a profound impact in my life and possibly the life of those around me.
So I am going to spend the next 30 days doing something different in my life. Maybe even something I should be doing anyways but that I don't do as much as I should.
I want to invite each of you to try this out with me. I would be interested in how it impacts your life. What changes if any it has on you.
Here is a list of ideas that I have been thinking of.
30 days of......
Reading at least 5 pages of scripture. (that's equivalent to Matthew, Mark & Luke)
Refraining from eating sugar or flour
Doing a good deed daily
Give your spouse a kiss. A real kiss. Like when you were dating kiss.
Not raising your voice (to anyone)
No Caffeine
Reading the scriptures with you spouse
No TV (movies too)
Playing a game with you kid(s)(no matter how old they are)
Saying sincere and heartfelt prayers morning and night
Learning about a different religion than your own. Find out what it is that they believe. IE Buddhism, Islam, Judaism, Mormons, Hinduism,Catholicism etc....
Exercise (walking, running, biking, tae bo, sweatin' to the oldies)
If you have something you are trying to quit IE alcohol, smoking, biting your nails - now is as good a chance as ever.
If you have any suggestions or other ideas let us all know. This is just the starting list.
As for myself I am going to not eat sugar or flour for the next 30 days. I have an Academy to get ready for so I need to jump-start my diet and exercise program. Amy and I are also going to search the scriptures as a couple.
If you feel like taking part in this let me know. I would like to know how it is going so feel free to email whenever you can. Make sure to put up reminders around the house, dashboard, monitor, cupboard. I hope to hear from all of you soon. Pass this on to anyone else you think might be interested.

Hello!
Hello Friends and Family -Welcome to our Fear Family of Five blog! We hope to use this blog to keep in touch with you all and also to journal about our progress in our "30 days of change" experiment, which we will post about shortly.
This is us last Christmas, when we were only "Fear Family of 4 1/2." We have since had a wonderful addition to our family:
Dexter James Fear was born April 11, 2007 at 2:40 p.m. He is healthy and happy. Amy had a 3rd c-section in order for him to come into this world, and it's a good thing it was a c-section, because Dexter was 9 lbs 7 oz! It would have ended up being a c-section anyway!Dex has a bunch of dark hair and it looks like his eyes will be blue, like Mommy's and the girls'. Speaking of the girls, they are both adjusting pretty well to having Dexter around. They are very sweet to him and like helping us by getting diapers and singing to him when he's fussy. They are happy to be the "big sister" and "biggest sister."
Natalie is almost 5 years old and is attending preschool. She will be starting Kindergarten in the next school year and is very excited about it. She loves to sing and has an amazing memory for movie quotes and music lyrics, just like Jay.Beatrice is almost 3 and is a little comedian. Just last night, when the girls were supposed to be sleeping, Bea opened her door and yelled out to us, "Dad? Me talk to Natalie?" Jay answered, "No, Bea." She paused, "Dad? Me talk to meself?" What could we say to that? We told her, yes, she could talk to herself. She closed the door and proceeded to talk to Natalie anyway.
Well, that's the latest from here. We will be hanging out together for the next few weeks while Amy is on maternity leave. The time is already going by too fast. If anyone can think of a (legal) way that we can support ourselves and our family without either of us working, let us know? :o)
